What is SEO?

SEO stands for search engine optimisation. For a website to do well in search engines your website has to be optimised. If you have a website but you get very few visitors and very poor positioning in search engines your site needs optimisation. This could mean a whole redesign of your website or maybe just a few tweaks here and there.

What is an SEO Campaign?

A successful SEO campaign is the key to the success of advertising your website online. If your site cannot be found on any search engines then your need an SEO strategy. An SEO campaign is the professional way of getting long term search engine success for your website.

Can you guarantee a number 1 position?

No, nobody can, companies that promise this are a scam and to be avoided. You will only get ripped off. There are way to many key factors involved. The search engines algorithms are changing all the time, competitors working full time on SEO try to stay ahead and new sites are being added all the time.

What is Link Popularity?

Link popularity refers to the number of inbound links to your site. Inbound links are links pointing to your site from other websites. Building your link popularity is an important part of SEO and an important factor in getting top placements in search engines. Building Link Popularity is a great way to help your site gain competitive PageRank (PR)

Why does my website rank so badly in search engines?

There are a number or reasons why your site doesn't rank well. It could be the incorrect use of the title, description and content tags. You may not have any text on your home page. You may have used the same words too many times in one page which is known as spamming. Not enough pages throughout your site. Not enough meaningful content. Poor link popularity because of no or few links from other site.

How do Search Engine find websites?

Search engines use "spiders" to crawl websites and follow each link. Any new URLs will be added to the database. Your site will need to be submitted to the search engines and most search engines give you the option of submitting your website.

How long will it take?

It may take a few weeks or a few months. If your competitors are not working on their sites, your site could get on the front page and stay there without any more work doing. On the other hand if some sites are constantly working on their site then you have to do so and more.

A lot also depends on the amount of competition and keywords or phrases you are trying to target. By this I mean, if you type in Google "shoe" you will get around 64 million results (lots of months of work, even years). If you type "shoe shop" there is around 6 million (still months of work), and if you type "shoe shop Shropshire" there are under a million (weeks work). So the more results means the more competitors and the more work.

What is a "reciprocal link"?

A reciprocal link is a link from your site to another site and vice versa is called reciprocal link. An exchanging of links.

What are "inbound links"?

Inbound links are links coming to your website from an external website. Inbound links judge the popularity of a website. So the more inbound links a website has, the more important the site is considered to be. The inbound links should be descriptive, i.e. many of the links to this site are written like this:

Search Solutions your
<a href="http://www.searchsolutionsuk.com">Search
Engine Optimisation </a> Partners

This will appear like so:

Search Solutions, your Search Engine Optimisation partners

Inbound links should always use keywords to describe them.

How does Google work?

Google works on a text analysis system which means it search for the most relevant pages for a particular search term. Web pages need to be indexed and they become indexed by using "spiders", "crawlers", or "robots". Google's famous search engine spider, GoogleBot, uses links on web pages as a sort of avenue. The spider travels from site to site by following links from each page. When Google finds a new web page, Google will "crawl" the code on that page and then transport them back to its datacenter. Google's "FreshBot" may visit "indexed websites" everyday to keep the index fresh. Google's database maintain billions of pages and they use a proprietary formula (or algorithm) to "score" the relevancy of websites for each search query. The highest ranking, or "most relevant" websites for a specific query are listed first in the search results.

For example if you were to search for the keywords "computer repair". Imagine Google maintains two pages in it's index containing the name "computer repair" (although obviously in reality it would thousands). Imagine the first page displays the following headline, "Discount in computer repair". The second page it titled "How to fix your pc?", but mentions computer repair in the text of the article. Google will most likely rank the first page as "more relevant" and would then above the second in the search results. But if the second page has a lot more phrases of computer repair and more inbound links Google may put the second page first.

Other important factors with SEO is that pages should be informative, descriptive and keyword rich. Keywords repeated just separated by a comma, visible or not visible by colouring them the same as the background will not work. Google filters these sites out as "keywords spamming". Keywords in the title tag and description are very important. The number and quality of the pages linking to your site is what ranks your pages higher.

What are Keywords?

Keywords are the search terms people might type into to the search engines to find what they are looking for.

For example if you have a website about sports cars, then two of your keywords would be 'sports cars'. So if someone put 'sports cars' into a search engine, the search engine would go off and find pages titled 'sports cars'. This is why the title tags are very important.

Which SEO Company should I choose?

You can determine whether you have received a successful SEO campaign due to the positioning of the company website as a result of your search. If you found it easily enough it must be on the right track. A good company can also tell you of previous and on going campaigns for you to see for yourself.
