During our years of surfing around the internet we have encountered a huge number of sites, many of which are worth a visit. Here’s our current list of top sites.
Informational
One of the best sources of content on the net is wikipedia, this colloraboration project grows every day, its content can be used freely provided credit is given, even its script is freely available, and we use it in-house to power our own information wiki site.
Search Engines
Google publishes its guidelines so webmasters and site builders know the rules, what is acceptable and what is not. Google Guidelines should be followed closely.
Forums
The web is full of half information about many subjects and SEO is no different, but a really good forum we can strongly recommend is Jill Whalen’s high rankings – watch out for Jill’s own posts and those of my buddy James also known as Old Welsh Guy.
If your technically minded then the most informed place for SEO is webmastersworld this is the hang out of top guys from California and occasionally members of the Google team themselves.
Googleguy alias Matt Cutts has become more open over the last 3 or so years, and now even has his own blog – which is worth monitoring for his view on things.
Domain registration & Web hosting
We can’t fail to recommend our sister site Discount Domains, they have an equally friendly team as ours, and are an ICANN registrar and Nominet member.
Directories
Our own article directory site Article Alley is a leader for free content, but we should mention ezinearticles run by Chris Knight, who has a very strong site also.
Web directories used to be huge, but Google is very particular at the moment and even the smallest hint of links being sold leads to a penalty. Directories that are sufficiently worthy of Google’s favours.
– seems to be part of Google’s algorithm so getting a listing is helpful, but its $299 price per year, means it’s expensive and only worthwhile for commercial sites or those looking for extra link juice. The benefit is noticeable but not significant, it also depends on which category you submit too.
Dmoz or the open directory is another aspect of Google’s algorithm, but it really is hard work to get listed, sometimes taking two or more years of persistence to get in. Most sites just don’t meet their criteria. Paid Advertising
Google adwords is a strong source for advertising we can recommend it and run campaigns for you. There is no connection between the natural listing on Google and the paid ones so any campaigns will have no lasting value, which is a common misconception amongst our customers.
