Using Keywords on Your Site

Once you have developed a list of keywords being used by your prospects, you’ll probably be wondering how to go about using the keywords on your site. Now it gets complex.

The people programming search engines are not stupid. They know that sites are trying to manipulate the ranking process so that they appear high in the rankings. To combat this artificial ranking process, the search engines both hide the formula they use to rank sites and change it often. So what?

Well, one of the elements to getting a site ranked in the search engines is the number of times you use keywords on the pages of your site. This number was called the keyword density and was represented as a percentage. Some SEO companies had entire departments devoted to the subject. At one point, people figured out the key number was 14.3 percent for Google. There was much rejoicing. Then Google changed it!

These days, there is no particular density analysis that people point to. Most of the long time players don’t even think about it. Instead, the key is to create content that flows naturally and uses the keywords. The search engines evaluate pages for this and so you really only need to use the phrases as you would when writing naturally.

There are, however, some technical requirements when using keywords on your site. You should include the phrase in your meta tags. It should also go in the title. Many people use the keyword phrase alone as the title if it makes sense.

Now, an obvious question may have come to mind. If the search engines change the way they rank sites all the time, how do you know this article is still accurate? You don’t! This is why you pay SEO companies to stay on top of it!
